The reason this is a lot less strict than a physical license is because you can take a photo of the key and send it to somebody else, but it is a really dumb idea to share you MS account details, so ideally you are the only one in possession of the account that holds a digital license.
So if for some reason you were to take the new CPU+mobo out and put the old Intel hardware in, Windows (if it had since been activated with a digital account) would boot and claim it was unlicensed, because you revoked the license to the unique hardware ID of the intel system. You can go to some page in your Microsoft account settings (on their website) and revokw the license from the Intel system to relieve the headache. MS might think this is a brand new computer, but it really isn't. You actually have an unlimited amount of changes with a digital account license. If you have an internet connection, it either activates or refuses, very rarely is their some sort of error code.Īnd by upgrade you mean from like Home to Pro, right? If this is your concern, a digital license via a MS account is the way to go. There are never really any issues with activation.
So change this and that, activate, wait a while, change this and that, activate, wait a while, repeat.
You can make pretty much an unlimited amount of 1-2 changes. You just need to make sure it is linked to your microsoft account. To the best of my knowlege, no hardware change is allowed where windows was upgraded, but if you buy a copy of windows then you get at least one hardware change. The issue lies with upgrades to windows 10 vs buying a copy out right. I've since reinstalled windows and am still fully activated. I had issues with the hardware so swapped mobo and cpu to an amd system. I had an intel system that i had a bought and paid for copy of windows for.
If you are connected to the internet your issues with activation will be fixed If you still have the key # lying around, go to Settings -> Update & Security -> Activation -> Change product key, and insert the number. If you transfer a drive with a W10 installation that was activated with a physical key, then transferred that drive to a another computer with very different hardware IDs, then Windows flags it as a illegitimate copy.
